Where’s the beef?

Tonight, the first night of the Democratic National Convention, I found myself being swept up by the lovely stories and sweet videos laced with baby pictures, family memories, and smiling faces. It was touching to see Sen. Ted Kennedy rise from illness to give his support for Obama. Michelle's speech was beautifully written and it was cute to hear how she and Barack met. But really, where's the substance here?

These aren't auditions for daytime dramas or Lifetime movies, it's an election! What credentials does Michelle have to evaluate her husband's readiness to be the president? Why should we, the voters, put faith in what she has to say? I understand that she thinks Barack is an outstanding father and husband but tonight I heard little evidence for why he should be the next president. I feel the organizers missed a big opportunity tonight.

I think the point of Michelle's speech was more to show how the Obamas represent the American dream and a family in touch with American ideals...not really to tout his policies, etc. She did make some poignant remarks about Barack's early working years in Chicago, which says a lot about his character.

I agree with you about the lack of substance. I felt that way about a lot of the speakers at the DNC. It all seemed to be a big production. In such a close campaign, I was expecting more details, specifics, and substance, but there is still time. My expectations are high.
