Lady Obama

The Obama camp took the opportunity last night to have Michelle Obama stand up in front of the DNC and the rest of the nation who tuned in to say, "Look how likeable she is. Forget about anything you have ever heard before, this woman will make an excellent First Lady. She is pretty, well spoken, intelligent and she cares about the plight of Americans everywhere. She has the heart and poise everyone expects from a First Lady."

I think this was the perfect way for the Obama camp to try and erase the memory of "for the first time in my adult life, I am really proud of my country ..." which seems to be the only part of that quote that seems to resonate in the minds of Americans. They took the opportunity to put her in front of a very large audience and let her tell everyone how proud she is of her country and her husband.

Michelle Obama was showcasing her ability to be the First Lady. Ever since Martha Washington, the First Lady has been someone of interest to the public. Though through the late 18th and 19th century it was very rare to actually see the First Lady, with the exception of a few (Martha included) or for her to take a role in life outside of entertaining outside of the White House. Many modern First Ladies have taken an active role in political life and reaching out to the people, Michelle had the opportunity to show she could the same.

They say that when Martha Washington travelled to New York to meet President Washington at the Presidential Residence, she was greeted by New Yorkers and Americans throughout her journey northward who addressed her as Lady Washington. Perhaps Michelle Obama and the Obama camp were showing she could be just that, just as American as the very first First Lady...
