The American dream is something that everyone desires to achieve. The American dream for some is a family, other it's success, or pursing a career. I would suggest someone is living the American dream when they are free and have accomplished their life goals. So what's wrong, especially in America, with becoming wealthy and owning a home or seven homes to be specific?
The Barack Obama campaign wants to portray John McCain as an elitist because of his success and seven homes. What's wrong with that? If it were any other person that wasn't running for a political office we would celebrate for that person. Yet many Americans do not want our own politicians to have any success and wealth. Frankly, I do not care if my President has large sums of money or very little. As long as they can perform their required duties as leader of the free world I am satisfied.
Many of our Presidents, of all political parties, have been wealthy and sometimes, dare I say, owned more than one home. Presidents Kennedy, Johnson, Ford, Reagan, and many others were known for their wealth. Even, President Clinton who is supposedly the "man of the people" who feels our pain has quite a bit of money. President Clinton and his wife reported 20.4 million dollars in 2007 and Senator Obama and his wife's 2007 income was 4.2 million dollars. Those amounts are significantly higher than John McCain's reported income of 405,409 dollars in 2007. So who is the elitist?
In all honesty I truly do not have a problem with Senator Obama or anyone else for that matter for being successful and making money. That's one of the many things this country advocates is to be free, work hard, and have an entrepreneurial spirit. This country provides many opportunities to better yourself and your country.
I want to clear up another misunderstanding on the Presidential "housing crisis". The conventional wisdom is Senator McCain does not know how many houses he owns. The news media has failed to accurately report the situation. The reporter posed the question to Senator McCain, "How many houses do you and Mrs. McCain have?" His response was "I think-I'll have my staff get to you. It's condominiums-it's further-I'll have them get to you." It's not Senator McCain doesn't know how many he has but whether or not the reporter is counting condominiums, the houses that his wife owns, and other factors to be considered. Granted neither answer would be a good politically correct answer-whether he answered the correct number of houses or I'll get back with you. I suppose Senator McCain was taking Senator Obama's word when Obama said he was the agent of change and wasn't going to delve into partisan politics. Obama is supposed to be only talking about the issues. The only houses Senator Obama should be discussing is the true housing problem in America right now.
