Former Secretary of State Colin Powell endorsed Senator Barack Obama today. Mark Halperin of TIME discusses the estimated effects of Powell's endorsement in his online article, "How the Powell Endorsement Boosts Obama." It's interesting to read that one endorsement is projected to occupy the media for the remaining two weeks, right up until Election Day.
Powell remarked that America "needs a generational change" and that Obama "has captured the feelings of the young people of America, and is reaching out in a more diverse, inclusive way across our society." This comment reflects on our generation and Senator Obama's "grassroots" technique. The door-to-door and college campus movements are not unusual, but more believable in this general election.
With an endorsement from such a strong political figure, Senator Obama may soon increase his current 5-point lead in the polls. Powell is "a brand unto himself in American politics" especially with his trusted judgement. Also, Powell's experience in national and international affairs lends credibility to Senator Obama and his campaign, downplaying some worries of Obama's inexperience. Finally, Powell's ties to the Republican party are of great importance. This cross-party endorsement is unexpected and pointed. Senator Obama appears to be more of "the future" while Senator McCain remains one of the past.
