In a recent online article from Time Magazine, Joe Klein explored the health care question posed by Tom Brokaw at the Nashville Presidential Debate. The question was "Is health care in America a privilege, a right or a responsibility?" Obama's answer began with a simple statement "I believe that health care is a right for every American." For many people in America that are struggling paying medical bills or are now bankrupt due a medical emergency, I think this truly hit home. By beginning with the story of his mother dying of cancer at 53 and fighting with the insurance company even up to the end, he made this complex issue relatable. It was something people could empathise with. Whether you agree with Obama's proposed policy or not, you have to agree that this was a well calculated political move. It brought him down from his "celebrity status" to everyday struggles over a common problem--health care.
