Oh how the candidates change. Several news sources covered the Alfred E. Smith Memorial Foundation Dinner, which was attended by both presidential candidates on Thursday night. Less than twenty-four hours after insulting the opposing candidate and arguing during the final debate, the candidates were laughing and joking with each other. And although the jokes were obviously planned ahead of time, they were very entertaining and funny. Obama joked about his humility before stating, “Contrary to the rumors you have heard, I was not born in a manger. I was actually born on Krypton and sent here by my father, Jor-el, to save the planet Earth." John McCain also poked fun at himself but also at the political scene: "Even in this room full of proud Manhattan Democrats, I can't shake the feeling that some people here are pulling for me. I'm delighted to see you here tonight, Hillary."
The dinner was a nice break from the constant attacks and criticism constantly launched by both campaigns. Personally, I found articles about the dinner much more enjoyable to read that articles describing the constant battle between the two. Additionally, I felt that both men were dignified and classy during the evening. They were both respectful towards each other, complementing the other’s accomplishments.
