Lessons Learned

Did you ever leave your sack lunch at home one day ? You know the lunch your Mom or Dad made for you to take to school, complete with your favorite sandwich, fruit cup , chips and dessert. Well I did and I remember calling my Mom and telling her that I forgot it at home. Mind you this was no revelation to her because she had probably reminded me at least 25 times to get it out of the fridge and when she arrived home from dropping me off at school, saw it sitting on the top shelf. Nonetheless she normally would bring me my lunch no problem or complaint. This until it became a habit. You see once I knew that Mom would bail me out and I wouldn't face the treachery of mysterious taco Tuesday, I had no good reason to remember my lunch, even if I forgot it Mom would bail me out and bring it to me. This went on for a while until one day I called and Mom said that she couldn't bring me my lunch today. I had a full out hissy fit. Why would a loving mother refuse to bring her darling child her perfectly nutritious lunch today ? Well Mom told me that yes she could bring it, but that wasn't the point. You see if I never knew the feeling of "Oh my gosh I have really got to eat mysterious taco's today because I forgot my own lunch" then I wouldn't learn any accountability. Now mind you I couldn't spell accountability nor comprehend its meaning at that time, all I knew was that this time I had gone too far , and would have to suffer for my forgetfulness. In case you are wondering Mom did end up bringing me my lunch, but it was not after many hours of dreading taco Tuesday. Point is , I almost never forgot my lunch again because I had learned what it felt like to not have something I had counted on. Yes this is relevant to the upcoming Presidential election because my story parallels the major economic and financial crisis that the US is experiencing at the moment and the impending aide to the financial industry with "a $700 billion bail out" according to CNN . OK I know this is going to make people mad but here it goes, so what. So what the financial industry is in dire times and need, but nobody forced them to make the loans that are now weighing them down. My father has a saying in his office and it says " Bad planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on mine." In other words, yes the American financial industry has forgotten its lunch yet again , and is looking for Mom ( US Treasury ) to bail them out. I understand that we need to do something to help, but do we ever really learn our lesson so we will not make the same repeat mistakes again ,if we are always rescued before sweating it out a little? Not to say that the financial industry hasn't been sweating it out but like I had to learn as a child, sometimes a little fear goes a long way. Mind you I am not claiming ANY expertise on the matter whatsoever, but seems to me that unless this is going to sink all of America into an unrecoverable hole, we should ride it out and brave taco tuesday.
