After watching former New York City Mayor Rudy Guiliani speak and Gov. Sarah Palin's acceptance speech, I sat back on my sofa speechless. I am not sure what to think. I'm a moderate because I agree with the Democrats on some issues and vice versa with the GOP. However, after watching the crowd chant, "Drill, Baby Drill" I was dumbfounded . My first thought was, "Wow, how ignorant do these delegates sound!" Another issue I was perturbed by was the bashing of the Democrats. Now, I watched the DNC, but I don't recall hearing any of the speakers and nominees downright degrade the GOP. Guiliani and Palin were both making quips about Obama, saying sarcastically to the crowd, "You know, the community organizer."
Then at the closing night of the RNC, McCain delivered his acceptance speech. Although many people have probably said this already, the most emotional part of the speech for him (and for me) was when he told the story about his dreadful capture in Vietnam. How can this man still be normal after he was a POW for nearly six years? Torture is one of the most horrendous, inhumane acts a human being can do. God only knows how he endured it and had the courage to persevere through it. And when the North Vietnam military caught word that McCain was the son of the commanding officer, they gave him the choice to leave. However, he said he would only be released if his fellow inmates were released too.
“When I turned over the offer, they roughed me up and they broke me,” he said. “I fought as hard as I could. No man can only stand alone,” he said emotionally.
McCain is a true-blue patriot and courageous war hero. And like he said, “I love this country and I would do anything for her.”
