An Apostle of Alaska

After reading the inside look at Sarah Palin by NEWSWEEK, I got a better feel for the woman behind the Republican Vice-Presidency. We’ve been told of her family, her state and the job’s she and her husband have held but this article gave a nice back ground into her world. It highlighted her initial relationship with McCain. Never actually meeting him until late February, I liked the fact that she refused to openly support him until she met and spoke with the Senator. It made me feel that she was not just in it for the publicity but that she agrees with his plans for the country and is willing to put her name behind it.

I also thought it was interesting to see all that she has done for her state and what has made her so well liked by the people. After a trip to Kuwait to visit the Alaskan National Guard, she was asked about her views of the war, she answered, “I'm not going to judge even the surge. I'm here to find out what Alaskans need of me as their governor." While some might see this as her not caring one way or another I think it shows a woman that knows how much to take on at a time. As governor of Alaska it is not her job or duty to make a personal stance on the war. She is there to help and support the citizens of Alaska and make sure their best interest is at hand.

While I look forward to hearing a more in depth look on her ideals and thoughts, I liked that the article highlighted a few of them, “she's pro-life, opposing abortion in all cases except when the mother's life is in danger. She opposes same-sex marriage and favors teaching creationism alongside evolution in schools.” Yes, every politician ends up at one point or another being a hypocrite. Or even sometimes putting their personal beliefs before their best judgment but I like that when I see her name I know a few of the things she holds true. Even if I don’t necessarily agree with all of them.
