Opening Night - DNC

Michelle Obama made her speech tonight, opening night of the DNC in Denver. At first she seemed nervous but seemed to adjust quickly.

She covered all her bases when reaching out to voters. First she pointed out that this week is the 88th anniversary of women having the right to vote as well as the 45th anniversary of "that hot summer day when Dr. King lifted our sights and our hearts with his dream for our nation."

The next name she dropped was Hillary Clinton when she thanked her for "putting 18 million cracks in the glass ceiling" and gave people like her children so many possibilities and hope.

She followed these comments with "That is why I love this country." This is a far cry from "For the first time in my adult life, I am proud of my country."

She also mentioned "young people" several times during her speech. The Obama's have focused a great amount of resources, (such as the 3 a.m. text message) and time trying to get the young voters in America on their side, but have forgotten that they are the least likely to go out and vote. According to the 2006 census only 22 percent of registered voters 18-24 years old actually went out and voted. (http://www.census.gov/population/socdemo/voting/cps2006/tab05-2.xls)

I look forward to the next few nights of the convention. Tonight served as a nice introduction and welcoming ceremony. If history has taught us anything though, the gloves will come off over the next several nights. I would have to guess that the McCain camp will be watching and feeling the pressure to answer some of the blows that are sure to come.
