After reading the article "The Next President," I honestly could not think of a worse job on the planet than being the next President of the United States of America. Richard Holbrooke did not leave out one single problem the next President will face the second he is sworn in to what I would imagine to be a living hell.
Can you imagine being the one everyone single person in this country points his or her finger at when something goes wrong at home or overseas? Can you imagine being the leader of the most powerful nation in the world, having many of your decisions affect the lives of millions and millions of people all over the world?
I know some people can say, well hey that’s what they signed up for, but I still can’t fathom walking in their shoes when the next terrorist attack uproots the lives of millions of innocent people or when another country in the Middle East joins the bandwagon on nuclear warfare in support of its dangerous neighbors. The question to me is who would voluntarily sign up for such a job? I admire anyone who can devise a successful plan for the oil crisis, terrorism, economic decline, immigration, nuclear warfare, drug trafficking, global warming, and as Holbrooke proved in his lengthy article, the list goes on and on and on.
While many presidential elections have had the luxury of focusing on a few major issues, this election has had a plethora of issues protruding from every corner. I think it is so interesting to see how each candidate has chosen and will chose to deal with each and every issue as it is approached.
I couldn’t agree with Holbrooke more when he stated the importance of the return to leadership in our country. I believe this is something of the utmost significance, and something that has been lacking in the past few years. Hopefully, this election will bring that return, and as Holbrooke stated, until then “the world will be watching and waiting.”
