Cloud Over the Convention

Hurricane Gustav has already affected the tone of the Republican National Convention. The Republican Party has already discussed shortening the length of the four-day convention. Speakers such as Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, President Bush, and Vice-President Cheney have cancelled coming to the event. The GOP is concerned about the event because they also need to be sensitive to the thousands of people that may be affected by this hurricane only three years after destructive Katrina. The Republican Party fears that the celebrating of McCain’s nomination could bring a negative light to the Party because of Bush's criticism in the past about Katrina relief efforts. Although we may be better prepared for this hurricane it could be an opportunity for President Bush and his party to end on a positive term. Supporting the people affected by the storm, with strong and fast relief efforts this hurricane could become a defining moment for the President.
