In this Times Magazine article by Belinda Luscombe, the female reason for disliking, rather intensely at that, one of their own kind is explored not in terms of political reasons but instead purely “girl” reasons.
According to Luscombe, there are three reasons why a woman in this country would oppose the election, and thereby success, of Vice-Presidential candidate, Sarah Palin. The reasons include, “She’s too pretty, she’s too confident, or she could embarrass us (women).” She drew these three motives for opposition from things she learned from other girls in her high school, which then carried on and became applicable in her adult life too.
While I hate to admit it, I think it is very common for many girls in this country to approach other members of the same sex whom they are competing with in this same way. I thought this was a very creative and honest, considering the author of article is a woman too, way to approach the opposition Sarah Palin has recently been receiving.
Due to the influx of YouTube videos which have recently surfaced, bringing ridicule to the Palin side of McCain’s campaign, I think many women have greatly felt the, “She could embarrass us,” reason for pulling their vote away from John McCain due to the obvious involvement Sarah Palin would have in the major upcoming decisions our country will undoubtedly be faced with.
It makes me wonder if McCain has begun to regret at all the decision he made to elect Sarah Palin as his right hand woman. While I believe his intentions were good and at first they did swing the attention of the media back towards the Republican campaign, I can’t help but wonder whether Sarah Palin is bringing too much attention to herself and her own blunders with the media rather than attracting the public to the pros of McCain as the next President of the United States, and making sure that that becomes a reality.
But, there is no longer time for regrets, so hopefully McCain is ready to cover a huge amount of ground in the upcoming weeks to prove his capability to be the next leader of this country, or he will more than likely watch Barack Obama make history, becoming the first African-American President of a once slave trading country and hopefully the change our country needs to rebuild itself.
