I just read my first article about Ole Miss’ history and how historic it is for the first presidential debate to be taking place on campus on USAToday.com. I’m sure it will be the first of many from all news organizations.
While I was reading it, I felt a sense of pride of choosing to come to Ole Miss for my college education. It has overcome so much since 1962. Well, at least I thought that until I read the comments that viewers posted below the story.
People write about the Confederate flag being waved, how it is the most hateful state in the country and how racism is still very alive and well today. Am I just being naïve? Is it just because I’m a white person that I think we are moving away from the past?
For my point of view, I don’t think that we will be able to change people’s perspectives about Mississippi with stories or this debate.
