What an amazing week. I worked with MSNBC and I could not have asked for anything better. It was long hours, but it was definitely worth every minute! The producers and assistants were wonderful. They cared about us and made sure we were involved. It was all just very surreal.
On Friday, we helped produce general news and Hardball with Chris Matthews. It was so neat to see the actual time and effort put into the set before the show. It took ALL day Thursday just to put the stage together. It makes me appreciate all of the hard work that goes into each show. On TV, we just see the easy and pretty stuff; the people behind the scenes probably don’t ever get the credit they deserve. I was asked to sit in for Chris Matthews, which was very exciting! Since he is about 6’1” and I am only 5’6” I had to sit on things to make me taller, but it still worked. I made it work! I wanted to be Chris Matthews for as long as I could. Most of us got the chance to sit in and test the lighting and sound. We actually spoke to the producers in New York through the microphones, put the earpieces in our ears, and read from the teleprompter. It was so neat to be in the spotlight. It was the real deal.
The coolest thing to me was just sitting in the MSNBC workspace hanging out with Chris Matthews, Chuck Todd, Andrea Mitchell, and Tom Brokaw. Chris Matthews was in a conference call at one point, and he talked about what was going on in the news and what he would talk about on his show, etc. It was so cool to be there in the action with him and to see how he reacted to certain things “live”. I freaked out when he asked me for an Oreo and a latte. Yes, some of the work was only trivial tasks, but I was just happy to be there.
What an incredible experience!
