Sleezy Campaigns

Obama campaign that McCain's campaign is the sleaziest ever. In the CNN.com article "Obama aide: McCain campaign 'sleaziest' in modern history," Obama said referring to McCain/Palin, "They're going to talk about pigs, and they're going to talk about lipstick; they're going to talk about Paris Hilton, they're going to talk about Britney Spears. They will try to distort my record, and they will try to undermine your trust in what the Democrats intend to do." Obama says that McCain and Palin are not focusing on the issues; instead, they are just trying to distract the public and get attention.

I do agree that McCain's campaign is distracting. The news is constantly focused on Palin and the McCain/Palin campaign because it is what is entertaining right now. However, the Obama/Biden campaign does what they can do too to get attention on themselves. That is how politics is today. With no federal regulation against that they can say in their ads, they are doing anything to get attention and get higher ratings in the public polls.

Maybe the Obama campaign is making these accusations against McCain just to start a battle and get more newstime. Sounds like they are victims of their own hypocrisy. Campaigns should be more about the issues and being able to back up what you believe in. Today, campaigns seemed to be solely focused on pointing out the negatives of the other candidate. It is scary, but negativity sells. It also scares me to think how campaigns will be 20 years from now if we have already gotten this low?

This year for me senior thesis research, I will be exploring negativity in political campaigns, why it works and does not work, and if there is another way to get as much attention without the negativity. It will be very interesting to see these resutls.
