Yesterday I attended the Justine Panel Discussion: ‘Role of Teens in the Presidential Debate.’ Going into it, I didn’t know what to expect. Was there going to be just high school students? Are they going to know what they are talking about? Are they interested in the topics that I’m interested in? Once the discussion started, though, I was pleasantly surprised.
These teens were not just from Mississippi and not just in high school. They all introduced themselves and rattled off the numerous organizations that they are involved in: Model U.N., Youth Leg, Student Government and the list goes on. With their resumes filled, there is no doubt that these students are informed about politics and the world around them. They shared some, but not all, of the same issues that I’m concerned about.
It just makes me wonder why the youth vote is not as involved as it could be. Students have so many ways to get involved and informed through various organizations, and these teens showed that. Is it just laziness, not liking either candidate or something else?
