This certainly is an election of firsts. Not only do we have the first serious black presidential candidate, but we also have the first female on the G.O.P. ticket. The announcement of Alaska Governor Sarah Palin to serve as Senator John McCain's vice president ignited a frenzy of media excitement. The New York Times was as quick as any media company to roll out all the information it had on the self-proclaimed "hockey mom" from Sandpoint, Idaho.
This presents yet another first for modern politics: digging up the dirt on a 44 year-old beauty queen turned state governor. Each article the Times published on Mrs. Palin seemed to rehash the same information. I'm sure the repetitiveness will not last for long though. With this election's strange and new focus on the women of the campaign, along with Mrs. Palin's strange and new background, this is sure to make for an interesting blend of politics and media.
Obama has had the spotlight for quite some time, but I sense the focus is shifting, at least for awhile. The media will love figuring out how to cover the newest addition to the 2008 Presidential race. Obama might need to step aside for a bit; there's a new kid on the block.
