Is she out of her league?

Today’s online New York Times contained an article with the all-saying title ‘Concerns about Palin’s readiness as Big Test nears’. It talked about the fact people are more and more concerned that the Alaska Governor is just not ready for the job of America’s next Vice President.

It’s been a month since McCain announced Palin as his new VP and even though her entrance onto the political stage was a euphoric one, the excitement around Palin seems to slowly be fading. National polls suggest that the number of Americans who think she is not fit to be president has increased since her introduction to the country last month. Incidents like her interview with Katie Couric on CBS just a few days ago, worsened her situation and has given way to comedians like Tina Fey of Saturday Night Live to ridicule her.

Fact is that Palin has shown several times in the last month that she is just not prepared enough for an extremely important job as VP of America. By not being able to answers correctly she comes across as not having enough knowledge on topics that are of national interest. The fact that she just recently got a passport also makes her look untraveled and unknowledgeable of global issues.

Her charm, beauty and poise are undeniable, but the run for presidency is not about the candidate that comes across most as your next door neighbor. It is about who is fit for the job and who can lead the country. As the article states: since 9/11 Americans are looking at Washington for comfort and leadership and they want to be able to trust the ones in charge with their safety. What if McCain was elected president and something were to happen with him; Palin would become the one in charge. This thought frightens a lot of people, because the thing that made her so popular, the fact that people can relate to her, is at the same time the same thing that takes away her credibility of being tough enough and smart enough to have the future of the entire nation in her hands.

As David Forum, a former speechwriter for President Bush, said in the article, “I think she has pretty thoroughly, and probably irretrievably, proven that she is not up to the job of being president of the United States. If she doesn’t perform well, then people see it”

Even though Palin keeps on attracting large crowds, skepticism among not only democrats but republicans to is growing. With the upcoming debate between her and Biden this Thursday expectations on her performance are quite low. This could however play out in her advantage if she performs well. At this moment she is being trained intensely for the debate, more intensely and structured than McCains preparation, so we could still be in for a surprise.

This Thursday could probably make or break the Palin-effect. Will she fail or prevail?
