On September 11 while listening to All Things Considered on NPR, I heard JJ Sutherland's "Pride, Concern As Candidates' Sons Head to War." No matter who wins this election, it will be the first time in years that the president, the vice president or both have children serving in the armed forces while the nation is at war. John McCain has two sons in the military, Sarah Palin's son Track deployed to Iraq on September 11 and Joe Biden's son is in the National Guard. Although these men have very different roles in service, they all deal with many of the same issues associated with deployment. WHen asked about receiving special treatment, Pentagon officials responded that the men will be treated like any other soldier. But retired Col. James Currie, a professor at the National Defense University disagrees. He believes that they must receive special treatment in order to be fair to their fellow unit members. Otherwise, they would become unnecessary targets. Currie stated, "Can you imagine the propaganda victory is al-Qaida or some organization over there were to injure or kill or, heaven forbid, capture the son of a president or vice president?" In consideration for their fellow soldiers, these sons should be removed from fighting and placed with safer duties if their parent is elected into office.
