A breath of fresh silliness

For weeks now the word on everybody’s lips on campus, off campus, everywhere in the Oxford surroundings has been the debate. And why wouldn’t it be? It’s one of the most groundbreaking moments, not only for the town but for our university as a whole. Ole Miss will be part of one of the most important moments in American history. There has been said a lot about if the debate is even worth all the trouble and all the money. Some say it isn’t, most say it definitely is. Whatever your feelings are about the debate, fact is you are a part of it, whether you want it or not. You’re now part of history.

So ok, we are part of history and yes, it is a huge deal. But after weeks of eating, sleeping, breathing the debate it feels like we are getting a political overload. That’s why today felt like a breath of fresh air. For the first time in weeks, life on campus focused on another election, which for ones did not revolve around suits, fancy ads and impressive words. To the contrary! Signs painted by new age Picassos, heels where even Sarah Jessica Parker would trip over, pretty dresses, nice shirts, screaming people (ok, there is a point of resemblance): today brought some color to the word ‘election’.

I know, the election for ‘homecoming queen’, ‘Miss Ole Miss’ or ‘Colonel Reb’ is in no way comparable to the presidential election. Of course it is not nearly as important. But for one moment, just a few hours, we could finally let go of all the seriousness and lose ourselves in some silliness. For a second we could breathe a new election air.

By sunrise the spotlight will be back on Obama, McCain, the debate and everything that comes with it. However, let’s for now just enjoy our Queen, Miss and Colonel. The President will be back tomorrow.
