After reading The Next President, I have a renewed appreciation for the tremendous amount of disagreement and pressure that is thrown on the president...especially when you consider the significant events taking place in the USA today: high fuel prices, the war in Iraq, the sinking economy, the decline in the housing market, etc. We need someone who is ready for the long haul.
There will always be disagreement because the multi-party system exists on differing opinions. No, Bush did not take an immediate position on climate change, but maybe there was a reason. Right or wrong, maybe Bush did not believe the changing climate was due to the burning of fossil fuels, etc. but was a natural, reoccurring event in the evolution of the earth. As time has passed, maybe the W. has come to believe that a multi-faceted approach is the solution. Maybe thinking that not only should we accelerate our drilling and production capacity, but maybe we should move quickly into the development of alternative sources of energy, such as the development of products like ethanol, electric cars, etc. Let's hope so.
The Iraq issue is difficult. The genie cannot be put back into the bottle. Hopefully, we have, in some way, assisted the Iraqi people in determining what type of government they want, or what type of leader they want, or in realizing that people that have different religious beliefs can co-exist. Maybe we can't, or won't, or shouldn't win the war, but even better, maybe we have helped the people of another country determine what THEY want.
