This election is constantly proving itself to be a historical election. Senator Obama becoming the first African American nominee has proven to be an excellent competitor. He is a strong speaker and although he may lack in experience he was chosen a strong running mate, Joe Biden. Joe Biden has been chairman of foreign policy in the Senate. Biden strengthens the Democratic campaign ticket as a leader and a teammate who is also hungry for change. I believe that the Democratic National Convention was very successful. The speeches were extraordinary and inspiring, without insulting John McCain. It will be interesting to see the Republican National Convention in the next coming days and how they will challenge the Democratic Party.
John McCain made an intelligent move in choosing Sarah Palin as his running mate. It is wonderful the party has to chosen a strong woman like Palin, but I am worried that Palin is not experienced enough for the position. She has only been the governor of Alaska for less than two years and she has no foreign policy experience, but to argue that McCain is very experienced in foreign policy. It was a smart move by McCain to announce Palin when he did, steering the media always from Obama's campaign. We will see if Hurricane Gustav steers the media away from the Republican National Convention.
The conventions have changed their role throughout history and have now reached a point where they are no longer used to nominate a candidate, but to strengthen the candidate’s positions, while inspiring and unifying their parties. It is wonderful to watch so many Americans taking an active role in politics, debating and discussing issues like never before.
